This occurs when the printer is stuck in Direct Thermal Mode. In this mode, a printer does not use a ribbon so it doesn't know to use the uptake part of the ribbon.
To fix this issue and get your printer into Thermal Transfer Mode, follow these steps:
1. Open the printer lid where the ribbon is housed.
2. Ensure the ribbon is loaded and wind it back up to ensure it's tight, then close the lid.
3. Turn the power switch off for about 20 seconds, then turn the power back on.
These steps should put the printer back into Thermal Transfer Mode and you should be ready to print.
